Check out the step by step process below:
Part One: how to drain vacuum pump oil
- Begin by removing the oil pouring plug to relieve the pressure in the pump.
- Next, make sure to have a tray with a volume of at least 3L to collect the oil.
- Now the oil drain plug can be loosened and removed using a 10mm allen key, and the oil can be drained from the pump into the collection tray.
Part two: how to clean the oil tank on a vacuum pump
- Once again, make sure that you have an oil collection tray of at least 3L.
- Now remove the oil filter using a strap wrench.
- The oil from the oil filter can be poured into the tray.
- Next, moving to the front bottom cover of the vacuum pump, unscrew the bolts using a 6mm allen key to remove the front bottom cover assembly.
- Now unscrew the bolts holding the front top cover in place using a 6mm allen key and remove it.
- The exhaust mist filter can now also be removed.
- The bolts holding the rear end cover assembly can also be unscrewed using a 6mm allen key, and the rear end cover assembly should next be removed.
- The exhaust mist filter can now also be removed.
- Next, using a 10mm spanner, remove the float valve from the vacuum pump.
- The oil tank can now be cleaned. Clean all the parts and components of the oil tank with a lint-free cloth and the available cleansing liquid.
- Once completed, remove the O-rings on the rear end cover.
- Remove the springs in the spot faces of the rear end cover.
- Remove the O-rings from the front top end cover.
- Remove the baffle disk from the front top end cover.
- Remove the O-ring on the front bottom cover.
- Now, the oil sight glass can be disassembled and removed using a 32mm spanner. Once removed, it should be cleaned with compressed air.
- Now lubricate the O-ring with vacuum grease.
- Screw the oil drain plug with the O-ring on the front bottom cover using a 10mm allen key and 12Nm of torque.
- Screw the oil sight glass on the front bottom cover using a 32mm spanner and 20Nm of torque.
- Lubricate the front bottom end cover O-ring with vacuum grease and assemble the O-ring in the groove.
- Place the baffle plate on the legs of the front top cover.
- Lubricate the front top end cover O-ring with vacuum grease and assemble the O-ring in the groove.
- Fix the two springs in the spot faces of the rear end cover.
- Lubricate the rear end cover O-ring with vacuum grease and fit them into the groove.
- Now lubricate the float valve with vacuum grease and insert it into the anchor screw fixed in oil tank.
- Tighten the float valve at its position with the nut, using a 10mm spanner and 5Nm of torque.
- Lubricate the exhaust mist filter holder O-ring with vacuum grease and assemble the O-ring in the groove.
- Now the exhaust mist filter holder can be put back into place on the rear side of the oil tank.
- The rear end cover can now be fit into place and secured using bolts, a 6mm allen key and 23Nm of torque.
- Lubricate the exhaust mist filter O-ring with vacuum grease and insert it into the top chamber of the oil tank from front end.
- Now fit the front top cover back into place and secure with bolts, tightening with a 6mm allen key and 23Nm of torque.
- Next, fit the front bottom cover into place and tighten the screws with a 6mm allen key and 23Hm of torque to hold it in place.
- Apply vacuum grease at the oil filter plug.
- Apply vacuum grease to the O-ring face of the oil filter.
- Screw the oil filter onto the oil filter plug using a strap wrench.
Part three: how the clean the inlet port on a vacuum pump
- Start by removing the inlet filter.
- Unscrew the bolts using a 6mm allen key to disassemble the inlet flange. The inlet flange can now be removed, along with the O-ring on the inlet face groove.
- Remove the inlet valve piston and the spring. Make sure to check the rigidity of the spring. If it is still strong, it can be reused. If not, then it should be replaced.
- Clean the inlet valve piston and the spring.
- Now locate the inlet valve piston and the spring on the boss of the pump cylinder.
- Lubricate the O-ring with the vacuum grease and assemble it into the inlet face groove.
- Assemble the inlet flange and tighten the screws with a 6mm allen key and 23Nm of torque to keep it in place.
- Now clean the inlet filter using compressed air.
- Lastly, insert the inlet filter in the inlet port.
Part four: how to clean the cooling system of a vacuum pump
*Please note, the instructions on how to clean the cooling system on a vacuum pump is only applicable for the LB 65 and LB 100 vacuum pumps.
1. Begin by masking the inlet and exhaust of the pump.
2. Next, remove the button head screws of the fan cover using a 4mm allen key.
3. Now remove the fan cover and clean the blower fan with compressed air.
4. Remove the sintered bronze air filter. It can be cleaned using compressed air.
5. Assemble the sintered bronze air filter using a 12mm spanner.
6. Now clean the fan cover with compressed air. Once complete, it can be fitted back onto the vacuum pump using a 4mm allen key and 5Nm of torque.
7. Lastly, remove the masking from the inlet and exhaust of the pump.
Part five: how to do a coupling check on a vacuum pump
- Start by removing the view port cover plate using a 4mm allen key.
- Now check the hardness of the spider. This is done by gently scratching the surface. If it crumbles, it should be replaced.
- Now check the gap and the play between the two couplings.
- If you notice any damage to parts while checking the coupling assembly, please contact us for a coupling change.
- The view port cover plate can now be placed back on the cover plate. Tighten the screws using a 4mm allen key and 5Nm of torque to secure it in place.
Part six: how to add oil to a vacuum pump
- Pour the oil into the pump until the oil level reaches ‘max.’ this can be seen on the oil level sight glass.
- Lubricate the O-ring with vacuum grease and put in back in place on the oil drain plug.
You have now successfully changed the filter and oil on your Leybold LB 40, 60, or 100 vacuum pumps. Remember to dispose of any broken, or unneeded materials responsibly, as per your local regulations, and to store your tools so they are ready for the next service.
