- Gareth about the job as a Field Service Engineer
Ops Manager
"What excites me most about working as a Field Service Engineer, especially with vacuum pumps, is the diversity of applications they’re used in"
"Every day, I have the opportunity to meet new customers from different industries—whether it's steel, supercars, or even food production. No two days are the same, and I’m constantly learning something new.
I feel proud of my work almost every day. Whether it’s solving a tricky issue or adding value for a customer, those moments accumulate, and each success reinforces my sense of pride in what I do. Vacuum pumps are unlike any other equipment I’ve worked on. They combine software, electrical, and mechanical elements, and each type is completely unique. That complexity is what makes the job so fascinating.
To succeed in this role, you have to be pragmatic and know how to connect what you’re thinking with what you’re doing practically. It’s all about finding that balance between hands-on work and problem-solving, and for me, that’s what makes the job perfect—I get to use both skills every day. The most rewarding part is when I leave a customer’s site knowing they’re happy with the work I’ve done, especially when I’ve managed to solve a difficult problem.
Working independently has helped me grow immensely. The freedom to make decisions and solve issues on my own has sharpened my skills and given me a lot of confidence. If someone’s considering becoming a Field Service Engineer but isn’t sure, I’d tell them to go for it—you’ll never be bored. Our role is essential to the industries we serve. We’re the closest to the customer, and we make a real difference. It’s not just about solving problems or performing maintenance; it’s about building relationships and working with the customer to find the best way to use our vacuum pumps and systems."
